Research Blog Inquiry Three: Two

In this article, Timothy Gaydos talks about how we get so caught up in the big advancements made in technology, we don’t realize the subtle ones. The big advancements is one of the main ways Hollywood sold itself. Hollywood prides itself on giving us the newest ways of enhancing our movie going experience from the when sound was incorporated in the 1920’s to the CGI boom in the 1990”s. We don’t realize how much technology of changed the fundamental aspect of movie making, the stories themselves. He talks about how The Blues Brothers, a cult comedy classic, could not have been made today. The story centers on a Jake and Elwood trying to reunite their band for a gig traveling across the country to assemble their former band mates. With the social networking sites such as Facebook there would be no need to the road trip. You could simply message them. In National Lampoon’s Vacation, everyone’s favorite family gets lost in unfamiliar territory. With the invention of the GPS there would be no more getting lost. Gaydos says, as technology increases it’s impact on our society, there are two main ways to work it into the story. You can openly embrace that technology is all round us or you can find ways nullify the technology.

I found this article very interesting because so many times just look at the major advancements technology has in the movie industry such as surround sound, IMAX, and even more recent 3-D movies, but we don’t realize how even things that you wouldn’t expect like a GPS system can affect the movie industry forever. This will connect some of the other advancements in my paper back to my overall topic. I will talk about a big advancement and a smaller advancement and then connect how whether big or small technology changes the industry
