In this article, Eduardo Porter talks about how online
piracy affects the economy as a whole. He says, “The use of peer-to-peer and cyber locker sites, most of it for illegal
sharing, amounts to over one-fourth of all Internet traffic”. Illegal
downloading is expected to grow Twenty Three percent annually, on average until
2015.
Porter states, “the
fact that money not spent on music or movies is likely to be spent on something
else.” I have never thought about that. By illegal downloading, you are going to
spend the money you would have spent going to the see that movie on another
product. Piracy hurts the industries that rely on copyright to protect their
creations. We have all seen what has
happened to the music industry. Porter thinks that will eventually happen to
the movie industry as well if something isn’t done. The reason it hasn’t yet is
because “movie files are bigger and require Internet bandwidth”, explains
Eduardo. Still, Hollywood has taken a major hit. “The hurt Locker” for
instance, this Oscar winning movie only generated forty-nine million dollars at
the box office but was downloaded seven million time illegally.
This article will
add a new aspect of file sharing to my paper. With this article, I will be able
to talk about how file sharing has affected the economy as a whole. Also the
fact about The Hurt Locker will add a great real world example to my paper for
my readers to relate to.
