Research Blog Inquiry Three: Five

The online file-sharing site Megaupload.com has been shut down, and its founder and three other executives arrested on charges of copyright violations and piracy, U.S. authorities announced Thursday.  Kim Schmitz, the founder, and three other men were arrested in New Zealand. In a press release the FBI stated, "This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime,". The justice department said that megaupload.com and other sites such as megavideo, megabox, and megalive have generated $175 million illegally costing copyright owners an estimated $50 million. Megaupload servers in Washington D.C., Virginia, Canada, and the Netherlands were shutdown. There URL and IP address go nowhere. Also, the FBI press release said, "For more than five years the conspiracy has operated websites that unlawfully reproduce and distribute infringing copies of copyrighted works, including movies — often before their theatrical release — music, television programs, electronic books, and business and entertainment software on a massive scale,".

When I read this article I thought if would work really well with the information I already found on file sharing. This article shows some of the strides the United States are taking to stop Copyright Infringement. I could find a lot of articles about what file sharing is and how is takes away from the movie industry as a whole but this article will be very helpful. I can show in my paper and example of a company getting shut down for copyright Infringement.
